Nature and Well-being

Why Are We Drawn to Nature?

Leaving the hustle of the city and going to the forest or sea calms the mind. This sensation that everyone experiences has evolutionary reasons.

This can be explained by the concept called the "Biophilia Hypothesis" (explained in detail in the "Biophilia Hypothesis" article). Because more than 99.9% of human history was spent in natural environments, we instinctively seek connection with nature.

The Scientific Effects of Forest Bathing

In Japan, "forest bathing" (shinrin-yoku) has been practiced since ancient times, and its health effects have been scientifically proven.

* Reduction of Stress Hormones: When placed in a forest environment, concentrations of stress hormones (cortisol) significantly decrease. * Improved Immunity: Substances called "phytoncides" emitted by trees activate human NK cells (Natural Killer cells). * Attention Restoration Theory (ART): Spending time in nature rests the overused "directed attention (ability to focus on one thing)" and allows recovery from brain fatigue.

The Concept of "One Health"

Now, in the worlds of medicine and environmental science, the concept of "One Health" is spreading. It is the idea that "human health," "animal health," and "environmental health" are all connected.

When the environment is destroyed and biodiversity is lost, unknown infectious diseases increase and mental health deteriorates. Conversely, protecting and enriching nature directly connects to protecting our own physical and mental health (well-being).

Why not take your smartphone and head to a nearby green space this weekend? Time spent searching for creatures with IKIMON should become healing time for yourself, not just for the planet.
